What you will learn
The ASL manual alphabet, A through Z
Correct hand position, palm orientation, and posture — the things that make spelling readable rather than merely correct
How to tell apart the handshapes beginners most often confuse: A / S / T, D / F, K / V, M / N
How to read fingerspelling back when someone spells to you, which is harder than producing it
Who this is for
Complete beginners. No prior signing experience is assumed, and you need nothing but your hands and somewhere to practice.
What this course is not
Fingerspelling is one small part of American Sign Language, not the language itself. ASL is a full natural language with its own grammar, syntax, and regional variation — it is not English rendered on the hands. Learning the alphabet gives you a useful tool and an entry point; it does not make you a signer. If this course leaves you wanting more, the next step is ASL instruction from Deaf teachers.
